WiFi-Connected Monitor for Piano Life Saver Systems

What is the DCM-1?

The PianoCloud DCM-1 is a small, battery-powered device that monitors the status of your Piano Life Saver (PLS) humidity control system and sends alerts to your phone. It checks for three conditions:

When a problem is detected, you receive a notification on your phone through the PianoCloud Monitor app. You can also invite your piano technician as a watcher on your device so they can see the same alerts and check status remotely — through the same PianoCloud Monitor app.

What's in the Box

Installation

Your piano technician will install the DCM-1 during a service visit. The installation takes approximately 10 minutes and requires no modification to your Piano Life Saver system.

  1. The DCM-1 connects between the PLS humidistat and the system using the included cable
  2. The unit is mounted inside the piano using the included adhesive strip
  3. Your technician will connect the DCM-1 to your home WiFi network
  4. Once connected, the unit begins monitoring immediately

Important: The DCM-1 does not modify or interfere with your Piano Life Saver system in any way. It is a passive monitor only.

  3. Scan the QR code with your phone's camera.
  4. Your DCM-1 will appear in the app within minutes.

Understanding the Status Display

In the App

Indicator Green Red
Power PLS system is powered on PLS system has lost power — check that it's plugged in
Water Water level is OK Water reservoir needs refilling
Pads Pads are OK Pads need replacement — contact your technician

On the DCM-1 Unit

The DCM-1 has two LEDs on the right side: Red (POWER) and Green (STATUS). Both are event-driven — the LEDs are off during deep sleep, so a DCM-1 that "looks off" is usually just sleeping between checks.

Pattern What it means
Green fast blink Connecting to your home WiFi
1 quick green WiFi connected — all OK
5 quick green WiFi failed — will retry next wake
2 quick red Server unreachable — will retry next wake
Red slow pulse (continuous) Waiting for WiFi setup — join DCM-1-XXXX
Fast green blink after boot (10 s) WiFi-reset window open — press EN now to clear WiFi
5 quick red WiFi credentials cleared
Red ↔ green alternating (~1 Hz) Firmware downloading — do not power off
10 fast red flashes Battery critically low — replace 3× AA lithium now

Boot version indicator: on first power-on (battery swap or manual reboot), the DCM-1 flashes its firmware version: MAJOR slow red flashes, pause, MINOR slow green flashes, pause. Example: v1.1.0 = 1 slow red, pause, 1 slow green.

Full LED reference, including OTA update sequence and auto-recovery patterns, is on the DCM-1 Support page.

WiFi Connection

The DCM-1 connects to your home WiFi network to send status updates. It checks in approximately once per hour.

Initial WiFi Setup

Your technician handles WiFi setup during installation. If you need to change the WiFi network (for example, after changing your router or WiFi password):

  1. Press the EN button on the right side of the DCM-1 once. The device reboots and tries to reconnect to the last known WiFi.
  2. Watch for a fast green blink — this starts a few seconds after boot and lasts 10 seconds. That's your reset window.
  3. Press EN once during the fast green blink. The DCM-1 confirms with five quick red flashes — WiFi credentials are now cleared.
  4. On your phone, connect to the temporary WiFi network named "DCM-1-XXXX" (the "XXXX" matches your Device ID on the front label).
  5. A setup page opens automatically. If it doesn't, open a browser and go to 192.168.4.1.
  6. Tap Scan, pick your home WiFi, enter your password, tap Configure Device. The DCM-1 restarts and connects to your new network.

If you miss the 10-second window, no harm done — just press EN once to reboot and try again.

Automatic recovery: if the DCM-1 goes 24 hours without any successful WiFi connection (or 1,000 consecutive failed attempts), it clears its own WiFi credentials automatically and returns to setup mode. You'll see eight quick green flashes before it reboots.

Battery Information

Battery Life

The DCM-1 is designed to operate for approximately one year on a single set of batteries.

Battery Type

3x AA Energizer Ultimate Lithium (L91) — these are specifically recommended for their long shelf life and consistent voltage. Do not use rechargeable batteries or standard alkaline batteries.

Replacing Batteries

  1. Remove the battery cover on the top of the DCM-1 (lift it off like a TV remote's battery door)
  2. Remove the three old batteries
  3. Insert three new AA Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries, matching the polarity markings (+ and -)
  4. Snap the battery cover back on
  5. The DCM-1 will automatically restart and reconnect to WiFi

Low Battery

When the battery voltage drops below a safe level, the DCM-1 will enter an extended sleep mode to conserve remaining power. Your technician will be notified that the battery needs replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the DCM-1 control my Piano Life Saver system?

No. The DCM-1 is a monitor only. It reads the status of your PLS system but does not control, modify, or interfere with it in any way.

Will the DCM-1 drain my Piano Life Saver's power?

No. The DCM-1 runs on its own batteries and does not draw power from your PLS system.

What happens if my WiFi goes out?

The DCM-1 will continue monitoring and will reconnect automatically when WiFi is restored. You may see a gap in status updates during the outage, but no data is lost — the device will report its current status as soon as it reconnects.

What happens if the battery dies?

The DCM-1 will stop sending updates. Your Piano Life Saver system continues to operate normally — the DCM-1 is independent of the PLS. Replace the batteries and the DCM-1 will resume monitoring.

Can my piano technician see my DCM-1 data?

Only if you have invited your technician as a watcher on your device. Your technician uses the same PianoCloud Monitor app and can only see the devices you have authorized.

How often does the DCM-1 check my system?

Approximately once per hour. If a fault is detected, you will be notified within one hour.

Can I move the DCM-1 to a different piano?

Yes. Your technician can reinstall the DCM-1 on a different Piano Life Saver system. The WiFi may need to be reconfigured if the piano is in a different location.

Does the DCM-1 work with all Piano Life Saver models?

The DCM-1 is compatible with Piano Life Saver systems that use the standard H-5 humidistat with LED indicator panel.

Is my data private?

Yes. Your device data is encrypted in transit and stored securely. Only you and your authorized technician can see your device status. PianoCloud does not sell or share your data.
